Outstanding AGC Student Chapter Contest Rewards Contractors of the Future

AGC awarded student chapters at Boise State University (Boise, Idaho), Arizona State University (Tempe, Ariz.) and Southeast Community College (Milford, Neb.) for dedication to community service and public service projects.  AGC student chapters encourage and support college student interest in the professional construction industry.

The 2008 Outstanding AGC Student Chapter Contest recognizes the top three student chapters for their remarkable work in the community.  This year’s first place winner was Boise State University; Arizona State University took second place; and Southeast Community College took third.  Winners are awarded cash prizes during a presentation at their local chapter.

AGC student chapters exist to encourage and support student interest in the professional construction industry. AGC in conjunction with local chapters supports over 125 student chapters nationwide. Congratulations to all the winners!

AGC Education and Research Foundation Scholarship and Awards Programs

Scholarship applications are now available online for the 2009 AGC Education and Research Foundation’s undergraduate and graduate programs.

College sophomores and juniors enrolled or planning to enroll in a full-time, four-or five-year ABET or ACCE-accredited construction or civil engineering program are eligible to apply for an undergraduate scholarship. High School seniors and college freshmen are not eligible. AGC’s renewable scholarships are worth $2,500 per year for each year of undergraduate study, up to a maximum of $7,500.  Over 100 scholarships are awarded each year.

College seniors enrolled in an undergraduate construction or civil engineering degree program, or others possessing an undergraduate degree in construction or civil engineering are eligible to apply for a graduate scholarship.  The applicant must be enrolled, or planning to enroll, in a graduate level construction or civil engineering degree program as a full-time student. The Saul Horowitz, Jr. Memorial Graduate Award, the Heffner Scholarships for Graduate Students and the Smith, Currie & Hancock Graduate Scholarships are worth $7,500 each, paid in two installments of $3,750.

Other awards programs include the 2009 James L. Allhands Essay Contest and the 2009 Outstanding Educator Award. Seniors in construction and civil engineering programs are invited to submit essays for the 2009 James L. Allhands Essay Contest.  The first place winner will receive $1,000 and an expense-paid trip to the 2009 AGC Convention.  The first place faculty sponsor will receive $500 and an expense-paid trip to the AGC Convention.  The second place winner will receive $500 and the third place winner will receive $300.
The 2009 Outstanding Educator Award is designed to recognize the accomplishments of full-time teaching faculty in construction education.  The 2009 recipient will receive $5,000 and an expense-paid trip to the 2009 AGC Convention.

All scholarship and award applications must be postmarked by November 1, 2008 to be considered.

2009 Marvin M. Black Excellence in Partnering Awards

The Marvin M. Black Excellence in Partnering Awards recognize successful partnerships and collaborations that work to improve construction projects.  Winners of this award stand out for the ability to achieve a common goal, honor all stakeholders, resolve conflict and improve communication on the project with all audiences.

AGC's Aon Build America awards honor AGC members who build the nation's most impressive construction projects ranging across the building, highway and transportation, municipal and utilities, and federal and heavy divisions.  AGC's Aon Build America Awards recognize general and specialty contractors working as prime contractors for projects completed in a calendar year.  Awards will be presented at AGC’s 90th Annual Convention in San Diego on March 4-7, 2009.

Liquid Assets Promotion Kits Coming Soon

AGC is actively promoting the Liquid Assets documentary to PBS stations and working with its nationwide network of Chapters to ensure that it airs across the country after it becomes available in October.  Beginning next week, Chapters will receive a Liquid Assets promotion kit in the mail, including the documentary and preview and instructions on how to work with local PBS stations to promote the film.

AGC members can visit the Liquid Assets Web site for more information. AGC of America has secured broadcast of Liquid Assets at local Washington, D.C., PBS stations WHUT-TV and WETA (Arlington, Va.).
