CONSTRUCTION ADDED 19,000 JOBS LAST MONTH AS STRIKE ENDS BUT INDUSTRY'S 17 PERCENT UNEMPLOYMENT RATE IS HIGHEST EVER FOR AUGUST
Industry Association Urges Congress and the Administration to Act on Long-Delayed Infrastructure Bills and Avoid Tax Rate Increases or Risk Further Job Losses
The construction industry added 19,000 jobs in August as a strike that had lowered employment in July ended, but the sector's 17 percent unemployment rate was the highest August rate ever, according to a new analysis by the Associated General Contractors of America of federal employment data released today. Continuing gridlock in Washington over infrastructure legislation and expiring tax rates threatens to keep construction workers unemployed much longer, association officials warned.

Chicago and Flagstaff, Arizona Lose Most Jobs, While Prince Georges-Calvert-Charles Counties, MD and Eau Claire, Wisconsin Top List of Metro Areas Adding Jobs for the Year
Construction employment declined in 266 out of 337 metropolitan areas between July 2009 and July 2010, according to a new analysis of federal employment data released today by the Associated General Contractors of America. The employment figures demonstrate the widespread decline in demand for construction services that continues to outpace stimulus-funded work, association officials noted.

CONSTRUCTION JOB GAINS BECOME MORE WIDESPREAD, LOSSES LESS SEVERE AS SIX STATES ADD JOBS BETWEEN JULY 2009 & 2010; 26 STATES ADD JOBS IN THE PAST MONTH
Kansas Tops Yearly and Vermont & New York Top Monthly Gainers; California and Nevada Experience Most Job Losses During Past Year While Illinois Experiences Largest Monthly Percent Decline
Construction job gains were more widespread across the country and job losses were generally less severe in July than in June, the Associated General Contractors of America reported in an analysis of state employment data released today by the Labor Department. Twenty-six states added construction jobs in July, compared to 19 in June, while six states added construction jobs over the past year and most others are losing far fewer jobs than previously, association officials noted.

As Stimulus Projects Begin to Wind Down and Private, State and Local Demand Remains Flat, Construction Group Urges Congress and the Administration to Act on Long-Delayed Infrastructure Bills
Construction employment decreased by 11,000 between June and July 2010 while the industry's unemployment rate fell to 17.3 percent, according to a new analysis by the Associated General Contractors of America of federal employment data released today. The third month of construction employment declines, despite the stimulus, reflects overall weak demand for private, local and state funded construction, association officials noted.

Construction employment declined in 285 out of 337 metropolitan areas between June 2009 and June 2010 according to a new analysis of federal employment data released today by the Associated General Contractors of America. The employment figures demonstrate how weak overall demand for construction is outpacing the benefits of the stimulus' $135 billion in construction-related investments, association officials noted.

Kansas Tops Yearly and Kentucky Tops Monthly Gainers; Nevada and California Experience Most Jobs Losses During Past Year While Wyoming Experiences Largest Monthly Percent Decline
Construction employment edged closer to stabilizing in June, as half the states either added construction jobs or kept the same number as in May, the Associated General Contractors reported in an analysis of federal employment data released today. Compared to June 2009, construction employment rose in six states, the largest number of states to post year-over-year increases since October 2008.

CONSTRUCTION EMPLOYMENT FALLS TO 14-YEAR LOW IN JUNE; INDUSTRY UNEMPLOYMENT RATE TOPS 20 PERCENT
Seasonally adjusted construction industry employment slipped in June to the lowest total since July 1996 while the industry's unemployment rate remained at 20.1 percent, more than double the average for all workers, according to analysis of new federal figures by the Associated General Contractors of America.

Most Jobs Added in Columbus, Ohio While Eau Claire, Wisconsin Has Highest Rate of Job Growth; Chico, California Has Highest Rate of Decline and Chicago Loses Most Jobs
Construction employment continued to suffer significant declines in the majority of metropolitan areas according to an analysis of federal employment data released by the Associated General Contractors of America. The figures reflect continued weak private, state and local demand as well as a lack of long-term projects caused by stalled federal infrastructure bills, association officials noted.

Louisiana Adds Most Jobs During Past Month, Hawaii Adds Highest Percentage; While Most Construction Jobs Are Lost in New York and Wyoming Experiences Highest Monthly Percentage Decrease
Construction employment declined in 25 states between April and May and in 45 states between May 2009 and 2010, according to a new analysis of federal data released today by the Associated General Contractors of America. Construction employment will remain weak despite the short-term stimulus while private, state and local demand for construction remains depressed, association officials noted.

Stimulus Gains Largely Offset By Depressed Private, State and Local Construction Demand
Construction employment declined in May as 35,000 workers lost jobs, offsetting most of the increases the industry experienced in March and April, according to a new analysis of federal employment figures by the Associated General Contractors of America. The figures show how fragile the sector is despite recent increases in stimulus funding activity, association officials noted.
